MORE ABOUT BABETTE
Babette Viljoen has been making music from a young age and plays various instruments. She obtained a master’s degree in Afrikaans and Dutch from North-West University. Her music career received a boost when she was named the winner of the prestigious ATKV Crescendo songwriting competition in 2011.
Some of the other highlights of her career so far include an award for Best Music-Driven Production at Aardklop (2018, for Krog) and a nomination for a kykNET Fiësta (2020, for ALTEmit a capella).
In addition to performing at various local arts festivals, she also works as a session musician for other artists, recordings, films, and studios. She is particularly proud of the opportunity she had to perform as an accordionist for William Kentridge’s The Head and the Load in 2022.
Babette currently lives in Cape Town, where she works as a freelance musician, songwriter, music teacher, accompanist, and organist for the NG Church, Somerset West. Along with Crescendo co-finalist Olga Leonard, she is the co-director of BO Productions.
