Cape Town rapper, singer and songwriter Jerome Rex fuses Motown sounds with neo-soul and classicist rap to create music that reflects the Mother City’s cultural melting pot. His last album Al Jerome earned him a Ghoema award for Beste Afrikaanse Hip-Hop Album van die Jaar (2019). He also boasts two previous Ghoema nominations for Beste Afrikaanse Hip-Hop Liedjie van die Jaar (2017 and 2019). Several of his singles have charted on commercial and community radio stations around the city, with two of them peaking at number one on Good Hope FM’s Hip-Hop Top 30. He also had singles charting on Bush Radio’s Cape Town Top 10, and received a Song of the Year nomination from Christian Community FM’s Hip-Hop Wednesday show.

 

Notable festival appearances include Oppikoppi, Woordfees, die Vrystaat-kunstefees, Suidoosterfees and Klein-Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK), where the production he was involved in (Rymklets van Oos tot Wes) won a Kanna award for best musical production.

 

He also featured in the Riel van Hip-Hop theatre production, which earned its producer a Fiesta award. Jerome co-wrote, produced and headlined his own theatre production called Lyrics Still Matter, which had a sold-out run at Artscape and attracted packed audiences at the iconic Cape Town Comedy Club and Woordfees. This year he produced his first streaming concert called Locally Produced, which featured appearances by Rouchelle Liedemann, DJ Eazy and Grandmaster Ready D.

 

He currently has a recurring supporting role in Arendsvlei, a telenovela that airs on kykNET. Jerome is curator of Expression Session Kuila, a community of creatives that provides space for artists to express themselves, network and collaborate with one another. He recently launched Make Art with Jerome Rex, a podcast geared towards creative entrepreneurs. The aim of the podcast is to encourage and inspire artists from all disciplines to grow their art into a self-sustaining enterprise.
