Selby
Williams
2022 finalist, singer and songwriter
BIO
South African singer and songwriter Selby Williams was born and raised in Avian Park, one of the most dangerous and gang-infested areas in the Worcester and Western Cape region. Despite this humble beginning, Selby has always dreamed of making an impact, not only in his local community, but also in the world.
As the second eldest of four children, he spent a lot of time with his grandmother. Whenever a special song played on the radio, he would sing along with her. This is likely where his love for music began.
Despite peer pressure in his teenage years, his love for music persisted. After discovering several singing competitions, Selby decided that he wanted to be the next John Legend someday. After matriculating, he joined a community arts organization that helped him develop his musical skills. He had the opportunity to share his musical journey with audiences overseas as well.
Selby's participation in the ATKV-Crescendo Mentorship Programme in 2022 not only further solidified his love for music, but also prompted him to try his hand at composition for the first time. In August 2023, he released his debut album Hier is ek. In the process, he experienced firsthand how an artist develops his own musical trademark and foundation. His latest music video, Unhu hwangu, a Shona translation of ubuntu, was released on all streaming platforms a month later in September 2023.
