The popular ATKV-Crescendo mentorship programme, which will again be presented in 2026, has received a major boost through sponsorship from the M&M Music Academy, a holding company of Kwena Music.

This two-year sponsorship includes not only financial support—established and award-winning mentors from the industry will also be made available to take emerging artists under their wing during the program and prepare them for a career in the music industry. Throughout the year, the academy will further support Crescendo through mentorship workshops, artist showcases, and collaborative projects that offer participants practical experience and industry exposure.

With about six weeks to go, aspiring songwriters are encouraged to submit their original songs for consideration for the 2026 ATKV-Crescendo mentorship programme. Entries close on 31 December 2025, and the program will take place in Paarl in March/April 2026. Prospective artists will be selected to work closely with some of South Africa’s top musicians and mentors. Topics include: the art of lyric writing and songwriting; how to create radio-friendly music; social-media marketing and brand building; and sustainable career development in music.

"We believe that music is for everyone. There are too much red tape and too many excessive costs holding new artists back. Our mission is to ensure that no artist worth their salt is held back due to a lack of funds.”

According to Eben de Jongh, Chief Executive Officer of Kwena Music, the sponsorship forms part of a greater vision to develop artists sustainably. “We believe that music is for everyone. We want to break down the walls between artist and audience and make music more accessible to everyone who wants to create and share it. There are too much red tape and too many excessive costs holding new artists back. Talent is not determined by how much money you have, and our mission is to ensure that no artist worth their salt is held back due to a lack of funds,” says De Jongh.

Morné van Staden, project coordinator of ATKV-Crescendo, says that the partnership means Crescendo can offer more mentorship workshops in more areas, reaching more people and developing more skills. “In doing so, we can make a real and lasting difference in people’s lives. Through this partnership, ATKV-Crescendo and the M&M Music Academy reinforce their shared goal—to empower South African artists, to amplify new voices, and to build a sustainable musical future for everyone who believes in the power of music.”

As wind oor my drome kom vee

en die wêreld my weer weeg

dan kom jy soos ’n fluister

tussen dinge wat ek nie kan sê.

Jy is die son in my winter

’n vuur sonder vlam.

Jy is die lig in my donker

’n stil soort bestaan.

Jy is die kalm in my storm

’n asem vol rus

’n lied in my twyfel

jy is my stil.

With these vivid words, singer-songwriter Edinia Citwa (43) from Mossel Bay introduces her latest single, “Jy’s my stil”, which will be aired on radio stations nationwide from 22 September. The song is the second single from her debut EP, Born to Win, which was launched earlier this year at the Daisy Jones Theatre.

The song is an intimate, personal confession that reminds us that love is not always found in grand gestures, but often in the quiet, present moments shared with the people who matter most.

“The lyrics of ‘Jy’s my stil’ came at a time when I was searching for silence and certainty myself,” Edinia explains. “I realised that love doesn’t always need to be loud and overwhelming – sometimes the most beautiful part of love lies in those still moments; in the presence of someone who is simply there. I wanted to capture that in images everyone can understand – the sun in your winter; calm in your storm ... That’s the kind of love I wanted to express with this song.”

Edinia, a mother of three sons, wrote the track while reflecting deeply on love, both found and broken. She put into words what she envisions for love in the future. “I long for a kind of love built on stillness and calm. I want everyone who hears this song to be carried away to those quiet spaces of love and certainty in love,” she says.

The song was produced by Eddie Strings in collaboration with the Crescendo production house. “Eddie immediately understood what I was searching for with the song. I wanted a sound that is soft, calm, and saturated with emotion.”

Edinia says the ATKV-Crescendo mentorship programme not only transformed her music career, but also shaped her life and character. “I did a lot of introspection and overcame many things in the process. It was – and still is – a life-changing experience.”

The ATKV-Crescendo GOUD production brings together Crescendo legend Petronel Baard and The Voice SA winner Craig Lucas, who will introduce four dynamic new artists discovered through ATKV’s 2025 mentorship programme.

The production is directed and produced by Whaden Johannes, himself a Crescendo alumnus and recording artist. “The audience can expect something fresh and different,” promises Whaden.

“Each of these artists brings their own unique voice to the stage. Crescendo has never just been about new music – it is about torchbearers, artists who carry the legacy in their own way.”

Whaden adds that the show will have a nostalgic touch: “Last year Crescendo celebrated 50 years of talent development. With GOLD, we want to pass the torch on to a new generation.”

For Petronel Baard, who won Crescendo back when it was still a competition, the collaboration with Craig Lucas is inspiring: “Crescendo’s vision has always been that talent is not meant for competition, but for enrichment. By sharing platforms, artists cross-pollinate, learn, and grow.”

Craig Lucas agrees: “As someone whose career took flight thanks to a similar programme, it is an honour to return as both mentor and performer. Initiatives like these can change lives. I am excited to support these four artists and contribute to the legacy of one of South Africa’s most important artist development platforms.”

ATKV-Crescendo project coordinator Morné van Staden is confident that GOLD will be another standout production from the Crescendo stable: “These artists are going to leave a real mark on the Afrikaans music industry. All I can say is … watch this space.”

The four artists to be introduced, alongside the Crescendo Orchestra under the direction of William Jacobs, are:

  • Lizl Simoes, pianist, master’s student, songwriter, and singer from Pretoria.

  • Mark Pekeur, performer from Paarl, currently studying at the Musical Theatre Masterclass.

  • Salvador Mouers, hip hop and R&B artist all the way from Windhoek, Namibia.

  • Tamryn Paulse, pastor and mother of three, also from Paarl.

ATKV-Crescendo recording artists of 2026 will be introduced to the audience by Voice SA winner Craig Lucas and previous ATKV Crescendo winner Petronel Baard.
