Deon Meiring
Finalist, mentor and artist
MORE ABOUT DEON
Deon Meiring started writing his first songs in primary school. He hoped it would make up for his struggles with rugby and romance. Unfortunately, it didn’t, but he kept writing nonetheless.
At that stage, he actually still wanted to become a missionary, but then his band, Glaskas, entered a competition. Although they didn’t win, they didn’t give up. In Grade 10, he placed third in ATKV Crescendo’s creative category with his song Vrede.
The following year, in 2006, Glaskas recorded their first album with the help of Jan Blohm.
These days, he performs his songs across South Africa, both as a solo artist and with Glaskas. “It’s almost like being a missionary because I get to travel, I have a message I want to share, and the compensation is unpredictable.”
On the romantic front, things have improved, and he is now a married man. Deon’s music has been featured in numerous films and television series. He also works as a minister for the InVia congregation in Stellenbosch, where he focuses primarily on liturgy and teenagers.
He is very excited about his role as a mentor during Crescendo’s workshops. “I love working with people who are just beginning their musical journey. It’s refreshing to see a world of creativity open up for the finalists with the right guidance. It takes me back to that magical time when I, as a schoolkid, first discovered my own songwriting abilities.”
