ATKV-Crescendo artist, Lucia Poggenpoel (33), launched her debut album As jy val (When You Fall) on 15 August at the Daisy Jones Theatre outside Stellenbosch. Sharing the stage with her were Joshua na die reën, Jean-Marc Meyer, and fellow Crescendo artist Taurig Claasen.
“I’m very proud of this album, but it took me a while to get these songs out into the world,” she admits. “I had to walk many paths of love, joy, and heartache in the process. These tracks come straight from my heart, and I praise the Lord for what has happened in my life. He is the reason I can now LIVE in capital letters, fully and freely,” says Lucia.
As jy val is the musical fruit of her participation in the ATKV-Crescendo mentorship programme, where she shaped her voice and stories into songs that bring light and hope. She shares that she immediately felt at home among her fellow participants and the programme’s mentors. “It felt as if I had finally come home. The people in this program are caring people who inspired me to reach higher creative heights.”
The Stories Behind the Songs
As jy val (When You Fall): This track is both a prayer and a declaration. It tells the story of her healing after the death of her brother. She was devastated but found restoration and strength through music.
Hou van jou (Like You): This song captures the secret thrill of a hidden love. It is light, playful, yet sincere. “I wrote this song for someone who has no idea how I feel,” she laughs. “I love singing, and when I like someone, I just write a song about it.” The result is a melody that makes you smile warmly—almost like being in love itself.
Hoop vir ons mense (Hope for Our People): Lucia performs this duet with Ghapi. “The message of hope here is shared on a broader scale—for a country weighed down by the economy and broken relationships. Ghapi is such a strong character to me. When he sings along, the song sounds so much more powerful and epic.”
Smoorverlief (Head Over Heels): This lively dance-floor hit was written by Lucia’s best friend “just to make some good noise.” She’s excited about the chorus: ‘Smoorverlief, my skat, my lam – ek is mal oor jou’ (*Head over heels, my darling, my love – I’m crazy about you*). It’s a love declaration set to an upbeat rhythm. “We thought, if you want to tell someone you’re head over heels, do it like this—with a beautiful melody that everyone can sing along to,” Lucia explains.
