Edinia Citwa from Mossel Bay is the first artist from the 2024 ATKV-Crescendo mentorship programme to release her debut album, Gebore om te wen (Born to Win), with the help of Crescendo Musiek. The launch will take place on 4 July 2025 at the Daisy Jones Theatre just outside Stellenbosch, alongside the singer Nádine.
The title track forms the heart of the album, which features five original songs written by this mother of three sons. Edinia reveals that she had never written in Afrikaans until, with the help of her son Lonwabo (15) and his computer software, she submitted Gebore om te wen for ATKV-Crescendo.
“Discovering that I can write in my mother tongue gave me the freedom to tell my truth and my story in an authentic and honest way.”
The following songs – essentially a reflection of her life’s journey – can be heard on the album:
“Gebore om te wen” (Born to Win), the title track, is a powerful statement of self-recovery and resilience.
“Jy is my stil” (You Are My Quiet) is a gentle love song for the person she has not yet met.
With “Ek is hier” (I Am Here), Edinia makes a bold statement: : “Ek is hier, vol en vry, sonder maskers, sonder vergelyking. Ek is hier, want ek het myself gevind. Ek is hier om te bly.” (“I am here, whole and free, without masks, without comparison. I am here because I have found myself. I am here to stay.”)
In “Die lewe van ’n skrywer” (The Life of a Writer), Edinia uses the analogy of a writer to describe her own life. “Ek sal skryf tot die sterre een vir een verdwyn, skryf oor dinge wat my hart laat pyn, want tussen letters lê my siel, ’n skrywer gee, al kos dit veel.” (“I will write until the stars disappear one by one, write about things that make my heart ache, because between the letters lies my soul; a writer gives, even if it costs much.”)
“Liefde is soos ’n rivier” (Love is Like a River), a duet with Riku Lätti, describes love as something that flows through every twist and turn, carrying her over the rocks and away from danger. The blues influence and Riku’s contribution give the song a unique depth.
Edinia admits she cannot wait for the launch concert on 4 July 2025. Not only will her children see her perform live for the first time, but she also gets to share the stage with one of her favorite singers, Nádine.
“I had to make a video to ask her if she would perform as a guest artist with me that evening. She didn’t even take long to say yes. It’s so special to be able to share this highlight in my life with her.”
The production of Gebore om te wen was handled by Jean-Marc Meyer in collaboration with Crescendo Musiek. For more information about Crescendo or to purchase tickets for the launch concert, visit www.crescendo.org.za.
